My Favorite Gut Healing Soup

Updated: Nov 11, 2020

Delicious bone broth soup that helps repair gut lining

I have been a vegetarian for the most part of my life. This is a cultural norm in my family and still continues to be! There was a period in my life when I needed to eat animal foods to bring my health back up. My gut, liver and kidneys needed animal derived nutrients to thrive. I had to learn to like meats and to be very honest, I am still very picky and I don't eat it often. There are a few recipes I have curated and bone broth soup is one of them. Trust me, if I like it, you will surely like it too!

“Bone broth offers a plethora of benefits. It has been used since the beginning of time and for good reasons!”

Lets find out why bone broth is a super food (In my opinion).

Bone Broth Benefits

1. Gut Healing

The gut has 4 layers and first layer is the gut mucosa. This layer is essential for commensal bacteria to thrive. Bone broth has so many nutrients like gelatin and collagen that support the mucosal lining. Furthermore bone broth contains L-glutamine - an essential nutrient needed to help seal and repair a leaky gut.

2. Joint Support

Along with collagen and gelatin, bone broth contains glucosamine a glycoprotein found in cartilage. It cushions your joints and soothes pain and inflammation. Bone broth also has essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium needed for bone growth and repair.

3. Soothe immune layer

When gut health is supported, immune health is also supported since the gut is the home for 75% of the immune system. Bone broth upregulates the production of immune cells like natural killer cells, macrophages and white blood cells. This is why this soup is awesome when you have a cold or flu.

There are many more bone broth benefits to tout. Here's my tried and true favorite recipe to reap in all its benefits. It is a tweak from one of my family recipes. It is perfect to have with noodles, rice, or hard boiled eggs. Decorate it with nourishing toppings likes carrot coins, radish sticks, cucumber slices, chopped onions, jicama, jalapenoes or other veggies and enjoy this slurp worthy soup!

Prep Time: 5 min Cook Time: 15-20 min

Ingredients:

20 Oz Organic Chicken Bone Broth (I like the one from Trader Joe's)

2-3 medium sized tomatoes - Chopped

1 tbsp ghee

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp cumin powder

salt and pepper to taste

1 sprig of mint and cilantro to garnish

Method:

- In a saucepan on medium heat, add 1 tbsp ghee. Add the mustard and cumin seeds. The seeds will start to splutter after a few seconds. This is called TEMPERING - helps release the flavors from the seeds.

- Once the seeds start to splutter, add the tomatoes and saute' for a few seconds. add salt, pepper and the other spices and saute' till tomatoes become a little tender.

- Pour in the bone broth and give it mix. Add in 2 cups of water and let the soup come to a boil - which will take 10 - 15 min

- Once you see a layer of froth on top of the soup, it is done! garnish with mint and cilantro.Turn the heat off.

- Slurp it up as is or serve with rice or noodles.

I make this soup on repeat and it has become one of my meal prep staples! Hope you give a try!
